Finally saw Pirates of the Caribbean 3. It was rubbish - and I love a good pirate movie so I was disappointed. Even Johnny Sparrow was uninteresting and I love him. But then right until the very end, Orlando Bloom dresses as a baddie, Hellllooo!

Never seen it in him before. Too girly/foppish for my taste. But put the lad in a black mutton sleeve shirt and a saucy bandana. Oh my.

HOW TO SPEAK AMERICAN

HORSE. A basketball game where if you score the other person has to take exactly the same shot from the same spot as you. If they score, great. If not, they take a letter of horse. A bit like the british game donkey but less focussed on failure, mockery and peer pressure.
7&7 This I discovered at Sundance. 7 is an American brand of whiskey. You mix it with 7 Up and you have a 7&7. Seems to be popular with college kids and sporty types. Best savoured from a classy polystyrene cup at impromptu 'tailgaters' in minus ten condition I found.
PARAKEET. A budgie, (this one nearly caused a fight).
BANANA BIKE. A Raleigh chopper.
HIPPITY HOP. A spacehopper. (It's taken me ages to translate this one. Good old google images saves the day again. )
BOO BAG. A kind of Halloween chain letter where you leave an anonymous letter and a treat on someone's doorstep on the run up to halloween. The note says 'you've been boo-ed' and the recipient has to do the same for 3 other people. Exists I presume because, despite the 2 month count-down halloween doesnt last long enough for Americans.
PEEDERPAN. What my Americanised daughter now calls Peter Pan.
GROUP GROPE. This apparently is a business term (don't ask which business!!) Means a team meeting to find out what everyone thinks, a brainstormy type of session. Or so I'm told. No wish to participate though.
ROACH COACH. So when there's a trailer or burger van type thang at the side of the road. That's a roach coach.
Jonesing. No idea of the origins of this one, I'm working on it though. It means craving. 'Like I'm totally jonesing for some chocolate'
SMOKED. My 8-year-old. On leaving a gymnastics party informed me 'mom, i'm totally smoked'. I have no idea what it means. Too scared to ask. I presume it means tired out. I hope so.
POSTAL. 'that guys is about to go postal'. This apparently means going into your workplace and ruthlessly mowing down your co-workers with a semi-automatic weapon. The term was coined after a spate of such happenings. They even named a video game after it. Charming. You would'nt get Pat n Jess doing that now would you?
